Kirkwall, Orkney, Vagar island in the Faroe Islands

St Magnus Cathedral in the main town of Orkney Island, Scotland. It was founded in 1137 and is one of Orkney’s most significant landmarks. It’s owned by the people of Orkney.

This fellow is resting for eternity in St Magnus Cathedral

Our ship is anchored in Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands

Salmon fishing in the Faroe Islands started in the 1960’s. Today farmed salmon is the country’s leading export product. They have ideal conditions for salmon farming including cold, clean oxygen-rich seawater.  They don’t use antibiotics.

Another example of salmon farming in the Faroe Islands. The boat you see here is used to feed the salmon in the pens.

It isn’t unusual to see houses in the Faroe Islands with grass roofs.  The plants can keep warmth within the house in the winter, as well as keep the house cool during the summer months.  The grass is mowed to keep the growth under control. Houses have been built like this for more than a thousand years.

A village along the shore of the Faroe Islands. Note the grass roofs on what appear to be modern homes.

Lovely waterfalls

Dramatic scenery

Our boat ride took us into a cave

We had to wear hard hats in the cave…beware of falling rocks.

We had an amazing boat ride to the bird island of Vigur.  We didn’t get to see many birds (it was feeding time for them), but the scenery more than made up for only seeing a few birds on the rocks.

The scenery didn’t disappoint

We were supposed to see tons of birds, but they were out searching for their next meal.

A little village we cruised by
