Dole and Dijon, France

Dusk

A lovely (and somewhat run down) private chateau we encountered on a walk.

A baker lovingly preparing the next batch of baguettes.

Wonderful boulangerie

Rabelo is lined up and about to enter a lock.

Rabelo entering a lock. It's a tight fit.

New friends came to dinner and brought 7 bottles of wine for us to sample.  I had great kitchen helpers.

Dole is a charming little city filled with art and history.  There are quaint buildings with canals, as well as old houses and a church dominating the scene. The center of Dole is a well-preserved conservation area.  Its claim to fame is that in 1822 Louis Pasteur (inventor of the rabies vaccine) was born there.  His birth house is a museum describing the life and scientific work of this famous scholar.  Worth visiting is the 16th Century Notre Dame collegiate church.

We explored the Passage Raymond III built in the 12th Century where we saw the pools once used for the tanneries.

Entering the Raymond III Passage.  The stones were slippery so I held on tightly to the handrail.

Dole is a charming town with beautiful flowers, peaceful canals, and ancient buildings.

New sculptures decorating the Dole park.

Inside Notre Dame

On May 25, 1608 the monks of Faverney exposed the Blessed Sacrament for public adoration.  A fire destroyed the altar but not the monstrance holding the Sacred Host.  The monstrance Host is still kept today with many pilgrims coming to visit.  This is in Dole.

Back in Saint Jean de Losne the town had a yarn bomb.

More of the yarn bomb.

We had a lovely visit with Chef Alex and his delightful wife Elizabeth.

The birthday girls toasting another year.

We had an interesting lunch in Dijon.  The restaurant gave us raw viande de cheval (horse meat).  It wasn't something I would want to sample again.

Dijon is a beautiful city worth exploring on foot.  Every time we walk around Dole we find an area we've missed on previous visits, with dramatic architecture.  These are original timbered homes.

Note the ornate carvings above the entrance to a building now used as an art gallery.

These sculptures and painting are above the agnificent fireplace.  Note the painted ceiling is colorfully and ornately done.  It is apparent the ceiling has been lovingly restored.
